Parenting

Parenting matters often arise during challenging circumstances. Decisions about children can feel particularly difficult when families are adjusting to separation or change. We provide steady guidance so arrangements can be made with care and clarity.

There is no single formula for parenting arrangements. Each child’s circumstances are assessed individually, with consideration given to safety, wellbeing, developmental needs, relationships, and meaningful connections with the people and environments important to them. For Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, or children whose parents were born overseas, connection to culture, family and community is an important consideration.

Safety is central to parenting arrangements. Where concerns exist relating to family violence, coercive control, substance use, mental health or other safety risks, these are considered early so appropriate protective arrangements can be explored.
